The first St. Patrick's Day in the USA was celebrated in 1737 in Boston. 270 years later and they're lining up in Southie tomorrow for the 106th parade. I mostly celebrated last weekend with the Pogues and a plastic cup of Guinness. It was excellent to hear The Body of an American live -- the first Pogues song I heard from the Poguetry in Motion EP in 1986 when I was 13.
Philip Chevron's Thousands are Sailing is such a stark contrast to the report I heard last night that 2000 people are returning yearly to Ireland. Not to mention our Lt. Gov. Tim Murray calling this month "the high holidays of March" with all of the St. Patrick's Day events he attends.
I guess 25% of the people in Massachusetts claim some Irish ancestry. I wasn't one of them until I discovered my great-great grandmother was a McNeely. Now if only I could figure out where in Ireland her family came from and what the heck brought them to Alabama.
