About: I'm Jen. I live a few miles outside of Boston. I do web work for a non-profit during the day.

This web page has been in all sorts of forms since 1994 when I first wrote HTML in emacs on a Unix terminal at BU. Now I prefer BBEdit on my Mac. I'm never quite sure why I'm doing this

Chickens and Whiskey

So I just read this article about people who keep chickens in their back yard. Honestly, it made me wish I had a back yard to put some chickens in. Not sure I could eat them though, but the eggs would be great.

The main photo with the article is of LeNell Smothers who raises chickens in her yard in Brooklyn. She also owns a liquor store where pets are welcome. That was interesting enough, but then I read this article about LeNell and her fella and the renovation of their old house in Brooklyn. They've been living in the house without walls, a bathroom or heat while they renovate. It sounds like a pretty great adventure to me.

At the end of the first article, LeNell says she names her chickens after relatives and "I'll probably slaughter them myself." Which is just too perfect when you find out she's from Alabama. (which I can say because I've had the tour of the red clay graveyard where my dad points out relatives who had been killed by other relatives)
