About: I'm Jen. I live a few miles outside of Boston. I do web work for a non-profit during the day.

This web page has been in all sorts of forms since 1994 when I first wrote HTML in emacs on a Unix terminal at BU. Now I prefer BBEdit on my Mac. I'm never quite sure why I'm doing this

UI11

At UI Conference

At the UI Conference listening to Joshua Porter talk about Social Apps and also tagging right now.

Between school, work, and this conference I'm swimming in thoughts of metadata.

I also had someone mention 4D to me which I hadn't heard of in years. My first job out of college was with a consulting company who did a lot of work in 4D. I remember working on marketing material for such projects. In class Tuesday night I saw a screen shot of a Harvard Library input tool that said it was a "4D Client." Perhaps I had been seeing things developed in 4D all along and hadn't noticed, but it's funny to hear about it twice in one week after almost 10 years of 4D silence.

This conference and my first two classes at Simmons have convinced me that I've made the right choice about getting my MLS. Sure, the readings for my cataloging class sometimes puts me to sleep, but I've definitely picked the right program. Since I'm putting myself into sufficient debt for school, this is a good way to feel.

  • 46 years after being expelled, Rev. James M. Lawson Jr is invited back as a visiting professor. They expelled him for taking part in lunch-counter sit-ins. I'm proud that my alma mater, Boston University, let him finish his degree back then.

This was fun even if the only song I new was the last one (Palomine) and I didn't even know they were still a band until the day before. Good stuff.
