About: I'm Jen. I live a few miles outside of Boston. I do web work for a non-profit during the day. This web page has been in all sorts of forms since 1994 when I first wrote HTML in emacs on a Unix terminal at BU. Now I prefer BBEdit on my Mac. I'm never quite sure why I'm doing this Archives

May 30, 2006 Boston Armenian Memorial Apparently Menino opposes the Armenian Memorial on the new greenway. I'm not sure I see his point -- part of me understands not wanting to make the greenway a spot for memorials. However, what green space doesn't have some sort of memorial? And where the hell is an Armenian memorial around town? There's the Holocaust Memorial and several Irish Potato Famine memorials. There's a Hungarian Revolution Monument. There's an African American History Museum and statues of Leif Eriksson. Menino helped put a memorial to Sacco and Venzetti in the Boston Public Library! I truly believe he just doesn't want a big deal about the Armenian Genocide going on in Boston, in a country where our president hasn't honored his pledge to recognize the Genocide. Aside from all of that, it's the ignorant jerks on the Boston.com message boards that are really upsetting. I shouldn't have let myself read their posts. They have no clue. Posted by Jen on

May 1, 2006 International Workers Day On May 1, 1886 an eight-hour workday in the United States to came in effect. Today they're chanting "No more death in factories" in Bangladesh, the unemployed are marching in Bosnia, and in Mozambique thousands marched for worker rights. Here in the U.S., nationwide immigrant rallies are happening. I understand immigration laws to a degree and this newly proposed bill, but what about including a clear path to legality?
