About: I'm Jen. I live a few miles outside of Boston. I do web work for a non-profit during the day. This web page has been in all sorts of forms since 1994 when I first wrote HTML in emacs on a Unix terminal at BU. Now I prefer BBEdit on my Mac. I'm never quite sure why I'm doing this Archives

August 28, 2005 Detroit From the NY Times: Paul Clemens is the author of ''Made in Detroit: A South of 8 Mile Memoir,'' which will be published in September by Doubleday and from which this essay is adapted. I'm reminding myself to get this book when it comes out. Jeffrey Eugenides wrote about Detroit in Middlesex and peaked my interest in once thriving cities which are now shrinking. Many are in the Rust Belt, like Detroit. More Detroit lately: saw Four Brothers in a shopping mall theater in York, Pennsylvania on a Friday afternoon. Made Detroit look like the wild west in some ways. Someone on the IMDb.com message boards is angry about how Hollywood is portraying their hometown. It's recently been beat out by Camden, NJ as the most dangerous city in the US. Posted by Jen on
